Underwater fishing lights are very important part of my night fishing trips and very useful to catch a variety of freshwater and saltwater game fish such as catfish, walleye, crappie, bass red snapper to name a few, and I want to explain why in my article today. Submerged lighting for night fishing can be used to catch both saltwater and freshwater species of fish that are predominately night feeders. These lights can give you a significant edge so think seriously about learning how to use them on your next fishing trip. In the following paragraphs I want to identify the key reasons underwater lighting used when fishing at night is so powerful.

You could use this little known secret to your advantage even without night fishing equipment, but submerged lighting intensifies the attraction. Once you learn were to locate the best place to set up your underwater fishing lights, your night fishing action will be intense. What is really cool is this simple process of life has been on old planet earth forever and is a essential part of the entire planets food chain, you just need to learn how to identify where it happens and exploit the process to your advantage. If this process did not exists there would not be any living organisms on our planet, and that includes us the human race.

The process is simple and is broken down into two parts which have scientific names of “Phytoplankton” and “Zooplankton” now don’t leave , I will explain in detail what they are and how you can use them To fill your fish basket every time!

What Is Phytoplankton – And Why It Is Essential to finding night fishing “honey holes”?

Phytoplankton is at the very bottom of the food chain. They are what is called the “plant form of plankton. They are made up tiny particles called “diatoms” of which there is golden algae, and green algae, and also what is called “cyanobacteria”. And you all are probably thinking what does this have to do with night fishing! All you really need to remember here is that without Phytoplankton there would be no food chain. Phytoplankton is at the very bottom of the food chain and is the process that kick starts the entire food chain process.

The “Zooplankton Animal” – What it is and why its essential when you set up your night fishing lights.

Zooplankton is the “animal form” of Plankton. They feed on the “Phytoplankton” and where ever there is “Phytoplankton” Zooplankton will be present. They are found at a Varity of depths both in freshwater and saltwater, and they are what small baitfish survive on. You probably are getting the picture know, Zooplankton eats Phytoplankton, bait fishing eat Zooplankton and game fish such as bass, crappie, walleye, catfish , and red snapper eat Zooplankton and right up the food chain!

Zooplankton Where to find And what does it look like?

There are basically 2 things you’ll be looking for before you set up your night fishing equipment and underwater lighting sources. The first thing is called “Chlorophyll” which is the base that indicates large patches of “Phyto” and Zooplankton. Chlorophyll and “Phytoplankton” go hand-in-hand – you’ll never find one without the other. Don’t let the “scientific” word fool you… “Chlorophyll” can be easy to find when you know where to look.

Make sure you note that Chlorophyll is attracted to sunlight or at night a submerged florescent light source and will gather in huge patches near the surface – usually in places with direct sunlight. When you find one of these patches, you’ll know. Do some scouting before night fall and look for “stained water” these patches will be close by. Amazingly if you use submerged fishing lights you can actually attract Chlorophyll patches even if you don’t start fishing near one. Then set up your night fishing equipment and drop your underwater fishing lights. Chances are there will already be a large bait ball present and you will start catching fish almost immediately and continue right into the night.

One of the key ingredients to have a successful night fishing trip is picking a good night fishing location. There is one common thread that seems to cross over from species to species of fish such as walleye, crappie, bass and catfish and that is they all cruise the shallows in the twilight looking for a easy bait fish meal. The trick is to find a good night fishing feeding ground that will work with your night fishing equipment.

1.0 How to locate good night spots for walleye, catfish, crappie and bass off of rocky points.

It has been my personal experience to look for night fishing locations for these species that are not on the windward side. Here is a few tips of what to look for. Since I fish from a pontoon boat I look for spots that will hold my anchors and 9 times out of ten I end up fishing off of rocky points on the side opposite where the wind is coming from. One of my favorite spots that I have caught many fish from is of off rocky points that are adjacent to sandy beaches. I like to anchor so my pontoon is just out of the wind. I then cast a couple of poles of my poles toward the shoreline along the break of sand to hard pan or rocky bottom. You will need to do some trial and error to find the “sweet spot location” You will want to set your anchors and drop your underwater fishing lights for the night here. Once you are anchored for the night cast your other poles close to your underwater fishing lights.

2.0 How to locate good night spots for walleye, catfish, crappie and bass adjacent to main waterways.

The second best night fishing location I can suggest is great when you plan twilight fishing trip and the night is windy. When you have windy weather conditions head for backwater areas that are adjacent to the the main body of water. Identify stumps and structure that has easy access back into the main water stream. These are the areas you will set up your night fishing equipment. I typically drop two underwater fishing lights near the structure but not on top of it. Set up your night fishing rigs with bobbers and hooks to fish with live bait. drop your lines just outside the submerged lights beam. Make sure you adjust your fishing depth close to the bottom at first, then work your way upward until you catch fish. You will catch a variety of fish species such as walleye,crappie,catfish and bass in these areas.

Night fishing for catfish can be a very rewarding fishing trip. Trust me If you do it correctly you will catch fish, not only will you catch fish but some will be lunkers! Catfish feed at night and are very active, and when they get into a feeding frenzy fishing action can be incredible! Catfish are attracted to submerged lighting And have a very keen sense of smell. If you can put yourself in the catfish’s nightly habitat location there are some simple methods you can use to entice the cats to feed more aggressively. Before I explain these methods in detail, there are some basic night fishing setups we need to address. Fishing at night is a totally different ball game then fishing during the day.

How To Set Your Boat Up For Night Fishing

There are some key items that are a must if you are planing a night fishing trip for catfish. The Items are as follows:, External Lights to attach inside the boat ,either battery or Coleman fuel type lanterns with two mantles. Distribute your lanterns evenly through out your boat. I hang 3 halogen batter powered lights in my 20 foot pontoon. I hang two in the front, one on each side of the boat, and 1 one on my canopy on the back of my pontoon.(I have used my Coleman’s but they attract a huge amount of insects)

I also recommend you purchase a small light you clip on the visor of a ball cap. This small light comes in handy when you are re-rigging your fishing poles. Trust me , no matter how prepared you are before your trip you will loose some tackle, from line crossovers, or snags, or fish snapping your line. (you can limit this by using heavy tackle and making sure your line is fresh) I personally use a led light that clips to the visor on my ball cap.

Your Next light source is to illuminate the surface of the water. I recommend 12v halogen light that can be directed outside the boat. Mount it on the side of your boat, in the center. I personally use and adjustable halogen that I can clip to the railing on my pontoon. Direct the light at a 60 degree angle from boat to water. This will illuminate the surface.

You will need a underwater fishing light source. You are probably asking your self right now why do I need submerged lighting?The underwater fishing lights will attract bait fish by the hundreds, and I am sure you already know the baitfish attract the cats. The reason the underwater fishing lights attract bait fish is because they generate what is called a plankton swirl, of which the baitfish feed from. You will be amazed how fast the big catfish will come and position themselves around the bait fish ball generated for the submerged fishing lights. Submerged lighting Underwater fishing lights can be purchased in a variety of different sizes and shapes. The one I use is 36″ long about 4″ in diameter.Center the submerged fishing light in the illumination pattern of the surface water lighting you just set up. Anchor your submerged lighting about 12 ” off the bottom, (without an anchor they will float on top of the water).. make sure the light completely submerged under the water. I recommend you use a 5lb weight as an anchor. If possible, anchor the submerged light about 2 to 3 ft from the boat.

I haven’t mentioned much about the secondary 12v power source that you will need to have on board your boat to power your underwater fishing light,other secondary light sources, and your bait aerator. “do not use your boats power source” This will drain your battery.”you don’t want to get stuck on the lake at night right? If you take a well charged 12v marine battery as your second source it will last through the night.

I recommend you have minimum of three catfish poles pre-rigged and ready to cast out into the water.The reason I suggest this is because it’s real pain the “blank” To re-rig at night.You won’t get away without re-rigging poles, but you want to avoid it as much as possible.

Locating the cat’s nightly haunts

Pre-planning your night fishing trip is a must for a successful night. Every body of water is different when it comes to catfish habitat locations, but it has been my experience, that in any body of water the bigger cats roam the shore lines or back waters in search of food at night. I highly recommend you do some research on the body of water you intend to night fish for catfish on. At Minimum Get a topographical map of the area before you attempt your trip. These can be attained at any of the local bait and tackle shops in the area. (I recommend you visit one of these shops to get the local scoop anyway, if you dig deep enough these guys can pin point on the map Where to start fishing. This will save you lots of time.)

Enticing the Cats to your boat.

Once you have your water surface lights and your submerged lights set up and ready to go you don’t even need to do the next step, you are ready to start fishing. The submerged lighting will get the schools of bait fish coming , but I take it step one step further because if you play on the catfish’s extra sensitive sense of smell you can drive the Big cats into a feeding frenzy! Ok You say how?

Well the answer is by introducing “chumming”. Chumming releases a slick of dead fish smells and fish guts that the small bait fish and catfish feed on. I use a simple very in-expense and easy to setup method of chumming. You can also purchase commercial chumming systems that you can set up.Find yourself a nylon netted bag that you close tight with a string. If you can find a netted bag that holds golf balls they work very well. This is what I use, works perfect , very inexpensive.Get yourself some good size freezer bags, at least 3 for a one night fishing for catfish trip.

Next, Purchase about 2 dozen good size chubs or cut up some other fish like small bluegill, and cut them in 1″ to 2″ slices, make sure you do this in a pan that will not drain all the juices. Fill the freezer bags pieces and juice all together, and let them sit outside in the sun all day long. Yes it will stink to high heaven by the end of the day, but that is what you want! Now stick the freezer bag in side the meshed bag that can close. Close the bag tight and tie a line at the bottom of the bag about 2 feet long. Attach about a 2lb anchor to get the bag to the bottom . Now tie a line at the top of the bag with enough lead line to get the bag on the bottom. Now before you lower the chum bag to the bottom take an ice pick, or something sharp that will puncture the bag , but not tear the plastic. Punch the freezer bag numerous times, then lower to the bottom an tie it off on the side of the boat.

Now its time to fish! But before we go there lets re-visit Your catfish rigs. There are many catfish rigs you can use, and they all work in situations they are designed for. When you are fishing at night and you have submerged a lighting setup ,you want get your line about 2 ft away from the light source, approximated on the outer edges of the source’s beam.

You will be fishing only a short distance from the boat, so your rigs need to be set up to fish in close proximity to the boat. You could fish tight line with a basic catfish hook and a small sinker. Or use a slip bobber system. I prefer to use the slip bobber system.

my preference is a single hook tight line or slip bobber rig, both work fine , but single hook is just my preference. I do use the double hook rig when fishing for other types of fish. I use all heavy duty, open face , and spin cast rod and reels with 30lb test. I use a heavy test line because you never know when you will hook into a monster catfish when you are night fishing.You miss some smaller cats, but it’s well worth it when you catch your first 10lb plus catfish.

Night fishing for catfish baits

Blue catfish and channel catfish will eat just about anything that has an oder, and they love small suckers,small shad, bluegills alive our dead.When I am set up for a good night of catfish fishing I will use both live and dead cut bait. I will normally set one pole up with a small live gill no more that 3 inches in length. My other poles will be baited with cut bait , normally LARGE suckers 6″ or longer cut in 1″ to 2″ chunks.

Fishing in the wee hours of the night is peaceful and calming sometimes. But when the bite is on watch out! Excitement is everywhere! One of the reasons I love night fishing is because there is very little fishing pressure. Very few fisherman take advantage of the fantastic opportunities you have when you go night fishing for any species such as crappie, walleye, catfish or bass probably because they just don’t know how. You will be amazed at the variety of different fish you will catch at night even if you are targeting a specific species of fish such as catfish. Today I want to give you some simple night fishing tips that will help you to become a better night fisherman.

#1 Underwater fishing lights.

Don’t go cheap when you look at underwater light sources, you need a good florescent light that generates a minimum of 25-40watts of power, and that will emit 1000 to 3000 lumens per tube. Submerged lighting sources will attract all kinds of little micro organisms called plankton. Plankton the primary food source of most bait fish. When bait fish start swarming around your underwater fishing light they attract great numbers of game fish that are looking at an easy meal!You just drop your lines a the outer edges of the light source and you are in business! I love going night fishing because of the variety of game fish you can catch at night. You can catch walleye,catfish,crappie and bass ! It doesn’t matter they are all their for an easy meal.And it is my opinion I could of caught very few of these fish without a good underwater fishing light source.

#2 Surface night fishing lights.

Surface lighting is very important not only for fishing but for your safety. I want to identify two primary areas that surface lighting will help you. As I stated above you need to be safe out on the water. Surface lighting will identify you to other night fisherman and recreational boaters. There are not many out at night but enough to cause watercraft accidents. MOST of these accidents are form improper surface lighting. The second reason is very important too. The light source will pro-ject across the surface and attract insects, yes I said attract insects! Insects attract bait fish and bait fish attract mare game fish! Just make sure you hang these lights outside of your boat so you keep most of the insects away from you. If you use a Coleman type lantern for night fishing make sure you shield the side facing into the boat so the light reflect back out and across the water. This limit the amount of insects that will attack you in the boat.

#3 Pre-Planning is important! Try to get out on the water at least an hour before night fall and identify the areas you plan to fish for the night. Identify land marks in these areas that can be seen at night. You may end up moving to multiple night fishing locations but having these area mapped out prior to nightfall is very important. If you have a GPS system they are a excellent tool for any night fishing pre-planning just lock in the coordinates for each location and you are set for the night.
