Chose The Right Fishing Rod

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Landing the catch of a lifetime or going home crying, depends on a number of factors. But none quite as important as the choice of fishing rod used.

Fishing rods are made from different types of materials: from wood and bamboo to graphite and steel. Fishing rods vary in size from 4 feet all the way up to 15 feet, with about 6 feet being average.

The question in your mind right now would probably be: How do I choose the right fishing rod?

That all depends on what kind of fish you’re out to get, the fishing spot of your choice and, of course, how much you’re willing to spend on your angling equipment.

But first things first. Always start with rod length. The length of the rod depends on two things: the kind of fish you aim to catch and the landscape of your chosen fishing spot.

Short rods of about 4 to 6 feet are best if your favorite fishing spot hole has lots of trees and overhanging branches like those in lakes and rivers. Longer rods help with making long casts in open water.

For larger, heavier sport fish like the pike & walleye, thick rods are best. The most common type being the spinning fishing rods. Lighter, more flexible poles (like Powell fishing rods) that work for smaller fish tend to snap when you’re angling for the bigger ones.

When it comes to the type of material used, few get any cheaper than bamboo rods, (going for about $5) which are great for children and beginning anglers. That is not to say that all bamboo poles are inexpensive. There are pricier handcrafted fly fishing bamboo poles that fetch upwards of a hundred dollars.

Rods made out of fiber glass are also good choices for beginners and children. They also have good balance and strength, plus they are easy to maintain. Fenwick fishing rods were one of the first to use fiber glass for angling, which makes them one of the first-in-mind brands when it comes to this category.

Graphite rods like the Carrot stix fishing rods and carbon steel like Kistler rods are the rods of choice for more experienced fishing enthusiasts because it is both strong and light.

Taking note of things like length, location, materials, flexibility and whatnot, fishing may seem such a daunting activity. But remove all the bells and whistles and you’re left with the most important point: to enjoy the outdoors. How many rods you own is up to you.

Save Your Hunting Trip – Own the Right Gear

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Don’t you hate it when you have a camping trip planned and the forecast calls for terrible weather? Have you ever postponed a hunting trip because it was too cold or rainy? I don’t have that problem anymore. Last November I decided to go to hunting camp with some of my friends. We made our plans a couple weeks in advance so we’d all have time to get our camping equipment ready. As opening day of deer season got closer, I watched the Weather Channel and the prospects didn’t look very promising. The forecast was for a snowy, freezing weekend but we knew it wouldn’t stop us from bagging our deer.

The fact is I had postponed too many camping trips in the past and recently purchased a four season family camping tent and some warm sleeping bags to stop it from happening again. The tent sleeps eight people so I knew we would have plenty of room for all of us and our supplies. I also knew we’d be warm and dry because the four season camping tent is built to conquer all kinds of bad weather.

As the weekend got closer, I packed all my gear knowing that we’d be going hunting as planned. Not only that but guys without the best camping gear would be staying home. Fewer hunters in the forest would mean better hunting for us. Also, you know how it seems like the deer know just when hunting season starts? Well, maybe because of the bad weather they wouldn’t be quite so careful.

Friday finally came and we packed our camping gear in the car and headed for the woods. All of a sudden it dawned on me that we forgot the picnic backpacks with the sandwiches for our first day in it. We don’t cook on Friday because by the time we arrive at camp and set up our gear, it’s too late to bother cooking.  After the first night though, we cook all our meals on our portable grill.

Finally we hit the highway. I couldn’t wait to get to hunting camp and set up our camping gear before the bad weather set in. For me nothing is better than a weekend at hunting camp with my best friends and the anticipation of the hunt to come. Stay tuned and I’ll tell you how we did on our bad weather hunting trip.

Boy Scouts Offer Life Changing Experiences

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

“This is lame,” Nathan grumbled as he stumbled from the comfort of his cabin at the Boy Scout Northern Tier high adventure base camp in Ely, MN.

Down at the lake, ten strangers wordlessly outfitted their canoes until Nathan gingerly stepped into his to confirm it wouldn’t tip. As suavely as a 16-year-old can muster at 5:00 a.m., Nathan shifted his weight to the one foot in the canoe.

His foot slipped, and Nathan couldn’t believe what he said. He landed headfirst into three feet of Moose Lake’s cold, motor-boat-tasting water—lanky legs flailing. It’s anyone’s guess how he managed to cram so many angry thoughts into so few seconds!” Wasn’t it enough that I agreed to go to Philmont with the troop last month? Wasn’t that enough?

Nathan’s blazing eyes shot out of the water to warn, “Don’t say a word!” One of the Scouts subtly turned his head to hide a smile. The guide allowed several seconds of silence before quietly cautioning, “You’d better have a good reason for swearing while you’re on this trip.” After a few seconds he said, “Good enough.”

Uproarious laughter began weaving the tie of brotherhood that firmly bound these Order of the Arrow (OA) members by the time they returned to base camp two weeks later.

The Boy Scouts’ service club invited Nathan and 69 other boys to work and canoe the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), taking up a third of northern Superior National Forest in northeast Minnesota.

The BWCAW is comprised of nearly 1.3 million acres that extend about 150 miles along the international boundary between Canada and the USA. The area contains over 1,200 miles of canoe routes, 15 hiking trails and about 200 designated campsites. It was set aside in 1926 to preserve its primitive character and made a part of the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1964. Visitors can canoe, portage and camp in the spirit of the French voyagers of 200 years ago.

“That first day, we paddled a long time until we got to where we all hoped was the end,” remembered Nathan. “The guides showed us how to portage, and we had to carry 850 pounds of canoes and stuff for over a mile; and then we had to put them all in the next lake and paddle some more. When we stopped at an ugly campsite, I thought even less of my parents making me go. That turned out to be a nice site because trees blocked the sun from waking us too early in the mornings. I don’t like mornings.”

These 16- through 18-year-old Scouts spent their first week repairing a 1.5 mile expanse of trail. The boys set up camp and then pulled out tools to start working on the trail. The guide pointed to a pile of large rocks and said, “You’re going to break up all those rocks over there and cover this trail first with softball-sized pieces, then over that with golf-ball-sized pieces, and finally with pea-sized pieces. Make it half a foot deep.”

The boys were shocked!

Not-so-fond thoughts of his parents provided extra momentum as Nathan forcefully swung a sledgehammer into the middle of one of the largest rocks. He couldn’t believe how much his hands hurt, so he dropped the sledgehammer and shook his hands.

Rain and snow damage the trails every winter; hundreds of Boy Scouts repair them every summer. They check dams, water bars, turnpikes and make gravel to prevent erosion, all to earn a week-long and memoriable canoe voyage. While laying down the gravel they make, Scouts learn about preventing erosion. They feel great about themselves and how much they’ve helped others enjoy this beautiful place.

“We didn’t think we could, but we did what we went there to do and in the right amount of time,” Nathan boasted. “They rewarded us with a bunch of jalapeno cheese. Then we started our voyage the next day.” All thoughts of his parents vanished.

During the fun part of the trip, the boys visited 57 lakes covering 100 miles. Memorable sites included the Otter Track near Canada, where the boys caught largemouth bass they cooked for dinner. They drank root beer to their hearts’ content. They jumped from the cliffs of the Fortress on Knife Lake and spent an hour silently contemplating life while looking at the unbelievable scenery.

“My crew and I started out as strangers,” said Nathan. “The trek made us feel like brothers.” We went lots of places, did lots of stuff, did some work to help out the Forest Service and shared some great campfire stories.”

The trip transformed him.

Nathan enjoys sharing travel adventures with friends and family at http://www.discounttravelhangout.com and would love to hear about your adventures too.

Duffle Bags – The Original Backpacks?

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

When I was a child, most people I knew carried duffle bags. Though there were a few with backpacks, they weren’t as common as they are today. Today, most will choose to carry a backpack if given the choice, but there are still some great uses for the duffle style of bag. There are some things just can’t be carried in a backpack if you want them to remain in one piece.

A backpack is convenient for several reasons. The biggest advantage is that they are so much easier to carry than the duffle bags. However, there are some who know that the duffle bag is the smart choice in many occasions. A good example is a musician. Though there are special bags for more sensitive equipment that they might own, many will carry those items in a duffle bag. If the same stuff were put in a backpack it would be broken rather quickly.

Though some people like to use a briefcase to carry important papers, there are some who don’t like the look. When they have a large amount of papers to take around with them, people will find the duffle bags will help protect those papers because they will be lying flat. Think about teachers who need to carry lots of papers back and forth to work each day, or the person who works from home for a few days a week. They have a lot to carry.

Duffle bags may not be as easy to carry as a backpack, but they are useful for many other reasons as well. They are even very useful for travel. They are often more versatile, and can cost less as well. However, when hauling something delicate around, the more expensive type of duffle bag would be the best buy.

Choosing the Right Sleeping Bag

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Camping has exploded in popularity as many parents take their children for weekend camping trips. Camping in the United Kingdom, even in the summer months, is always a risky business. Not because of Bears or Snakes, but due to the uncertain British weather.

But, as long as yiou have the right camping equipment you and your family can have a lot of fun, regardless of the weather. One of the most important pieces of camping kit has got to be your sleeping bags.

There are a great selection of sleeping bags to choose from these days, some will cost only a few pounds but others can cost a small fortune. So how can you select the right bags for you and your family?

Probably the first consideration is the time of year that you will be using your sleeping bag and where you will be camping. If you only expect to be camping during the hopefully warmer summer months then you will not need expensive, arctic quality sleeping bags.

Another consideration is packing. Will you be hiking with your sleeping bag in a backpack or will it never need to be crammed into a small pack? If you expect to be hiking with your sleeping bag in a backpack then size and weight will be important considerations.

Its also worth considering who the sleeping bag is for, how big they are and what their comfort requirements might be. Some people (including my own partner) are never comfortable sleeping within the confines of a sleeping bag and lots of children prefer to have child size bags.

And finally we must, of course consider the price. You will find both down filled and polyester filled sleeping bags at a variety of prices. Down filled bags tend to be the most expensive and those that are suitable for all year round and winter use are at the top of the price list.

The most affordable option is likely to be a polyester filled bag that is suitable for the hopefully warmer summer months. But don’t overlook the need for a good sleeping matt or maybe an airbed if you want the additional comfort.

Family Tents-Picking The Right Family Tent

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Heading into the great outdoors with your family is really something special. The thoughts of the wide open spaces, fresh air and quiet woods make you want to grab your family cabin tent and hit the road. Where you go does not matter just the thought of enjoying the time together as a family is what is important. A lot of people will stay away from a family camping tent, preferring a bigger, roomier trailer, or RV. The reason for this is that they often have not really looked into what is available in the way of roomy family camping tents. Lets look at things to consider when picking a family camping tent.

1. Find The Right Size Family Camping Tent

Family camping tents are all rated with a size according to how many people they can accommodate. There are 2-person tents, 3-person tents, and upwards. Despite what the size rating is make sure that the tent is big enough for everyone and has a little extra space. For example, if you have a family of 5 people, you will want to look at an 8-person tent to make sure you have room each person, and your gear. You many want to consider a family dome tent as they usually provide more floor space than other tent designs.

2. Strength Of Tent Is Important Too

Some of the criticism of sleeping in family camping tentsis that they will easily rip and then you spend the weekend with bugs, and rain. In reality, family cabin tents have gotten much stronger and reliable over the years. When purchasing a family cabin tent, or a family dome tent, check out the construction of it. Is there double seam stitching? Does it have reinforced grommets? Are the poles flimsy or heavy duty? Is the mesh screen thick or thin construction? Look carefully at each aspect to make sure that the tent will accommodate 4 or 5 people and not cause you any problems.

3. The Design And Shape Of The Tent

A family camping tent can come in a few different configurations. There are basically three shapes that all tents will come in. Most tents will come as an ‘A’ frame construction. These tents have two sides raised at the ends with a flat back and front. The sides are sloped towards a peak forming an ‘A’. Larger families will find this design unsuitable. There are Walled style tents that have poles at each end, and sometimes one in the middle. A large family will find this style of tent to be more comfortable an will provide more room for campers and storeage. Many times these wall tents will also have separate rooms.

Overall the best shape of tent for a family going camping is the family dome tent. These tents are more secure, and stable that any other kind as the wind can go around the curve structure. Family dome tents have more floor space with not pole in the middle. You can also extend some tents with additional rooms or vestibule for privacy, or individual rooms. The best feature of a family dome tent is that is is very quick and easy to both setup and repack.

No matter what tent style you choose, going family tent camping will bring your family closer together and provide experiences everyone will always remember.

Sure there are plenty of different options when it comes to fishing. You can go to various locations, fish for various different fish, and there are lots of other variations as well that are available to you. Fishing is one of the best, most widely loved sports in the world, and one that you should definitely try out.

You should especially try out striped bass fishing, which is different from all other types of fishing today. There is a certain thrill that you will get from striped bass fishing that you are not going to get from any other type of fishing that you try.

How To Get Started For Striped Bass Fishing

Be prepare for the trip of striped bass fishing as you selected it for many reasons and enjoy something different. So now you want to get all the gear that you are going to need for the trip. Start off with just the basics if you are only a beginner, just what you need to get by.

There are a few reasons as to why you are not going to want to go all out and spend a fortune on your striped bass fishing gear all at once if you are just getting into this sport. If you have not tried fly fishing for striped bass fishing yet then no need to buy a bunch of gear when you don’t know what are these?

Instead, what you are going to want to do is wait until you have tried out striped bass fishing for yourself and then be able to decide whether or not it is going to be worth you spending more money on equipment.

Once you have all the gear that you need, you are going to need to decide on a location. This is important because only if you choose the right location are you going to be able to catch fish.

Here’s What You Need For Your Camping Trip

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

It’s wonderful to get away for the weekend into the countryside in a tent. It is wonderful to be able to breath fresh air and eat outdoors, surrounded by beautiful scenery. Of course, having the right camping supplies and equipment makes the experience all the more enjoyable.

The basic things are the most important to get right. Tents vary in size and price, from the small one-man variety to large family tents. It’s important to choose one that suits the countryside and climate of the destination. Some tents are only designed for summer weather and any winter camping will require a 4-season tent. Most people camping like to have some kind of air mattress to sleep on. These come in single, double and king size with pillows and iar pumps that can be charged up from a car battery.

A good sleeping bag will ensure you have a sound night’s sleep. Again, there is a choice of materials aimed at different weather conditions. A flashlight with spare batteries or lantern is a good item to put on the camping supplies list. Plastic furniture is easy to keep clean and will last for years. There are portable stoves, Dutch ovens and barbecues, kettles and sets of durable pans and dishes. Food, wine and beer can be kept cool in mini refrigerators or cool boxes.

For those campers who don’t want to cook, camping supplies could include pre-prepared meals that just need added water. There is a large range that includes curries, chilies, meatballs and pasta and some delicious desserts. Screens will give protection from curious insects and windbreaks will give shelter from the elements.

Do the laundry is another consideration when camping outdoors. Mini washing machines and dryers will keep the family in clothes and camping supplies should also include a clothes line or airer that can be attached to the tent.

Toilet facilities are the more basic aspects of camping supplies but an essential concern. There is a wide range of chemical and portable toilets on the market.

Making Bait for Channel Catfish

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

You just went out and bought one of the best camping tents on the market. Now you’re going fishing for channel catfish. Channel cats are among the most popular fish in the Country. They are big, sleek and muscular and are lots of fun to catch. People fish for channel cats with night crawlers, minnows, crayfish, chicken livers and many different kinds of homemade bait. I can even remember hooking one on a piece of red licorice once. If one kind of bait doesn’t work, simply try another. I suggest carrying at least three types of bait with you when you go for channel cats.

If big channel cats are your target, I’d suggest that cut baits be one of your options. Cut baits are simply chunks of bait fish cut to specific sizes. The smell of these fish attract channel cats from far away. The best cut baits come from oily fish like shad, herring and even bluegills. You can even catch some bluegills before you start catfishing, cut them up and fish with the freshest possible bait.

There are many ways to prepare cut bait. Some anglers fillet strips from the belly of the fish and save the carcass and entrails for later. Others cut the bait in chunks using the entire fish including the head. Experiment with different combinations until you figure out what works for you.

I’d suggest that you try matching the bait to the size of the catfish you’re likely to catch. In waters with few cats bigger than five or six pounds, use bait cut into one to two inch strips. Where bigger cats are plentiful, three to four inch long will work even better.

The channel cats won’t be able to resist the taste of your cut baits. Now, you have to make sure you’re using the right hook to grab them when they sink their teeth into your bait. If you choose a hook that is too small, your bait will fly off when you cast and you won’t have any hope of catching anything. You can reduce the chance of this happening by using treble hooks. If you’re willing to spend a liitle extra money, you can buy treble hooks with springs to hold the bait in place. I think a properly baited number six or eight treble hook is the best for channel catfish.

So, now that you know how to make cut bait for big channel catfish, and you know what kind of hooks to use, you have no more excuses. Pack up your camping gear and your picnic backpack and head for your favorite stream to hook into some monster channel catfish.

Summer Catfish Day or Night or Both

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

In the world of sport fishing, catfish often are thought of as opportunistic bottom feeders. While this is primarily true, they can be more predatory than most anglers realize. Catfish can be caught in many different water conditions using many different techniques and baits.

If you choose to fish during the day and live with the summer heat, you can catch some nice sized catfish. In fact, the biggest drawback to this daytime fishing is that it’s not very comfortable for the fisherman. To locate the catfish during the hot part of the day, search for deep water areas with plenty of cover. If you can find a spot that’s 10 – 15 feet deep and in a shadow, you may just be in luck. Looking for boat docks, standing timber and other such cover during the day will help you locate catfish lurking in the shadows. Stand out in the sun for 10 minutes in the summer heat, and you’ll know why the catfish are smart enough to hide in the shadows.

During the summer, you’ll catch the most catfish after dark in shallow water. They will eat almost anything that moves or smells and if you do some chumming, you can help draw the catfish into your area. Don’t be afraid to move into the shallow waters and fish right near the shore. I’ve caught many catfish over the past few months in less than five feet of water.

Fishing shallow water after dark is fun but I personally enjoy fishing for catfish in moving water streams and rivers. Here I look for areas where deeper holes meet flats, bars or shallower riffles because the fish will move from one area of deep water to another. This is especially true between dusk and dawn. This is why night-fishing in the summer is among the most popular approaches to catching monster catfish.

Catfishing is a great way to spend time with family or friends. I like to make a weekend of it so I can fish at night and during the day. I pack my family camping tent and take off to my favorite fishing hole on Friday and don’t go home until Sunday. I always remember my bbq tools because there is nothing like fresh fish for supper. But, you know, sometimes the fish aren’t biting so I always fill up my picnic coolers with enough goodies to make it through the whole weekend. After all, who wants to lose fishing time running to the grocery store for dinner?

Fishing In Mexico

Fishing for sailfish in Key West

Over the years my husband and I have been lucky enough to take several vacations.  Some of our trips have concerned traveling to other nations and others have involved packing up the camping gear and boat and going to the lakes area.  Whatever what our destination our trips sometimes involve some out of doors activities, because we both enjoy passing time outside.

Some years ago we took a trip to Mexico.  Our clergyman gave us the name and number of a couple that he knows that own a condo and a deep sea fishing boat in the area we were staying in.  He informed us that he would call them ahead and make them aware that we’d contact them when we arrived.

We arrived in Mexico to wonderfully warm temperatures.  After we checked into our hotel and spent a couple of hours on the beach we called the couple and made arrangements to go out deep sea fishing.  The morning of the fishing trip we found the quay where they have their boat docked.  They have got a large vessel with a raised captain platform and a pleasant cabin area.  They hire a captain that knows the area for deep sea fishing.  There was also a young man to help us with the baiting of the large tackle that is used to catch the fish.  We started out from the quay at 6 o’clock in the morning.  We traveled twenty six miles out to be in the best area for striped marlin.

After we had been traveling for about forty minutes I realized that my man’s color was a bit off.  I was going to ask him if he was alright when he leaned over the edge to the boat to vomit.  He has always been sensitive to motion and the movement of the ship along with the scent of the bait and diesel fuel was getting to him.  He had taken medication before getting on the boat ; however it wasn’t helping him.  Just as our host was asking if we needed to return to shore the bait boy indicated that there was a fish on one of the lines.  My husband sat in the chair and was handed the rod.  It took him over thirty minutes to land the one hundred and 40 pound marlin.  between reeling in the fish and giving it more line he was throwing up into a pail.

Straight after his fish was released I hooked a 40 5 Mahi Mahi they were very worked up about this because it is so good to eat.  By this time my husband had the dry heaves so bad we needed to go back to shore.  When we arrived at the dock my hubby told me to take lots of photos as we would never be going deep sea fishing together again.  It took him the stayed of the day to recuperate.

If you prefer to stay in the U.S. then take a peek at the fishing for sailfish in Key West. With a profusion of species swimming in the waters around the Keys, there is never a dull moment for the sport fisherman.

The Most Important Pontoon Accessory

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Pontoon boats are known because of their versatility, enabling boaters to travel almost everywhere, but regardless of your coordinates, there probably isn’t a lot of shade on the water. When you’re out on your pontoon boat, without a means of protection, you’ll be basically completely open to the sun, rain, and even spray from other boats. This make it hard to get the most possible enjoyment out of your pontoon, whether you’re going fishing, sightseeing, or enjoying the water with friends. This is why most pontoon pilots rate the bimini top as an important addition. Bimini tops get their name from Bimini, the westernmost part of the Bahamas, where fishermen first used this sort of raised canopy on their boats to provide protection from the sun.

Now, bimini tops for pontoons can be found in various different types to suit the boat owner’s specifications. Bimini tops can be made of several different materials. There are polyester bimini tops, polyester-cotton bimini tops, vinyl tops, and a number of patented materials. With every option there’s a variance in durability, abrasion avoidance, and price. What’s more, they may possess mildew and UV-resistant properties. Tubing for bimini tops, which connects the top to the pontoon boat, is also available in different varieties, including aluminum and stainless steel.

The standard dimensions for pontoon bimini tops are eight by eight feet to eight by ten feet, with a clearance of about 46 inches to 60 inches. We all know that looks are important as well, and bimini tops are available in a number of colours, and you’ll surely be able to find one to suit the detailing on your boat. There are three basic styles available: traditional, or a basic square or rectangular shape; buggy-style, with additional flaps that extend downward and attach to the guardrail; and extra-long, which reaches beyond the cabin for additional sun protection.

In addition to the bimini top itself, it’s worth thinking about getting a storage boot, which will allow you to easily put away the bimini top while the boat is docked, as well as things such as privacy partitions, or towel clips, so that you can hang your towels from the bimini top. Some outfitters sell the different parts including fabric and tubing separately, allowing you to construct your own custom bimini top. There are enough options available that every pontoon boat owner is sure to find a bimini top that meets their needs.

Enjoy Your Camping Days

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Each summer lots of people do like something interesting: camping. This is a great activity to be done with friends, family and relatives. It can be done on a single day or even the whole summer period. Since my childhood, I have been an avid camper. I started then going on some trips with my parents and years later with my friends.

Those days, I either go with my family (my wife and kids) or alone. I usually like to spend a whole weekend far from the city. We found a nice place like 2 hours afar near a nice lake. The kids do enjoy the location a lot. It is good for people to breath fresh air once in a while.

The equipment used in camping is very important. During that escape, you should carefully select what you will bring with you. Don’t forget things for the kitchen and of course the North Face Vario 23 tent. Bringing two of them is the right thing to do for the whole family. One tent for the children and the other one for myself and my wife. This tent has very good water resistance and is lightweight. Do not forget to pack another fishing pole in case you will go fishing and your main one will get broken.

My family found that camping is an interesting thing to do. Running, enjoying outdoors, walking are what my children love to do. Personally, I found camping as a great escape for the daily stress. Even when it is raining, there are places designed to accommodate campers. It is simply the greatest sport for my kids, my wife and I. No matter if it is a rainy or a sunny day, in both cases, we can enjoy camping

My final point is about health and its importance when doing camping. Always bring some medical equipment (kit) with your when going on a camping trip. The nearest hospital can be far away from your camping place and you need to be prepared for any emergency.

Choosing an Inflatable, Rigid or Folding Kayak – Which is Your Best Option?

Monday, July 20th, 2009

If you are buying your very first kayak you will need to first think about the different types available.  Would a rigid, inflatable or folding kayak be the best option? You’ll have many questions and will need information to help you make the best choice. There are a confusing number of different types to choose from so we’ll have a look at the construction types of kayaks available.

The Different Types of Kayaks

* Rigid – made of plastic, wood, Kevlar, fiberglass, carbon fiber
* Inflatable kayaks
* Folding kayaks

Rigid Kayak’s Construction Materials

These are the sorts of kayaks that most people are familiar with. The least expensive choice here is a plastic construction which, however, is the heaviest. Plastic kayaks are reasonably tough and durable but are practically unrepairable if they are severely damaged. Slightly more costly is a fiberglass material which will be easier to repair and lighter but also can be damaged more easily. Further construction materials include graphite composites, Kevlar and carbon fiber which are much lighter but also more expensive. Though less popular, wood boats can be found, particularly in kit form to assemble yourself. Though they are fairly easy to repair they do require a lot more looking after than most other types of kayaks.

Features of Inflatable Kayaks

Inflatable kayaks are of course very good for transporting and storage. They are among the least expensive kayaks to buy, easy-to-use and their performance is as good as a rigid kayak. Inflatable kayaks are also very stable and buoyant so easily stay upright, which makes them ideal for the beginner. They can be used for calm water, in the surf even on whitewater so they are very versatile. You may be worried about their durability but if you don’t select the cheapest but select a good quality inflatable kayak it will probably be as strong as a rigid kayak. For most people, unless you are a serious competitor, an inflatable kayak could prove the best option.

Folding Kayaks

Folding kayaks usually are much pricier than the rigid type but they are extremely long-lasting, strong, flexible and stable. They generally have a wood or aluminum frame covered in fabric. Though they are more expensive they frequently have a higher used value and have a longer useful life than many of the other types of kayaks. However they do suffer a bit from lack of speed and performance can be inferior to a rigid kayak.

Nearly all folding kayaks use different materials for the hull and the deck. The decks are mostly made from a cotton blend or a man-made fabric. The materials usually used for the hulls is a plastic such as Hypalon, polyurethane or PVC over a synthetic cloth such as Dacron. Folding kayaks usually have air filled chambers in the hull to to help prevent capsizing.

Conclusion

Once you have decided between a rigid, inflatable or folding kayak you now need to think about where it will be used. Once more there are several alternatives including ocean, whitewater, recreational, fishing and more. The type you buy will be dependant on the situations and locations you will be using it for|where you will be using it. An Introduction to Nymph Fly Fishing

Monday, July 20th, 2009

What are nymphs and the best nymphs to use for nymph fly fishing

What is Nymph Fly Fishing

Nymph fly fishing is a more difficult fly fishing technique than dry fly fishing, as the nymph is under the water’s surface, and cannot be seen by the angler. When starting out, most anglers learn dry fly fishing techniques first, and then move onto nymph fly fishing when they have gained some experience. Nymph fly fishing can prove to be more successful when fishing in deeper water though, especially if there is no insect surface activity or hatch.

An aquatic insect in the adolescence (or underwater) stage of growth is called a nymph. Generally, the insects you see on top of the water are adult insects that have grown out of the adolescence stage. The fly fishing nymphs normally used look like insects in the larvae (or adolescence) stage.

Why is Nymph Fly Fishing Difficult?

The difficulty with nymph fly fishing lies with the fact that the fisherman cannot see when the fish takes the nymph, unlike dry fly fishing. The beginner fisherman may not know when to set the hook as it is tougher to detect a strike on the nymph. Also, the beginner fly fisherman may get confused when the underwater nymph bumps into underwater rocks or logs, and may confuse this with a fish striking the nymph. There is always a possibility that the nymph will get hooked onto an underwater rock or log, and its always difficult to get the nymph unstuck.

Dry fly fishing is two dimensional. As nymph fly fishing is three dimensional, the fisherman must work out the depth of the nymph for the best chance of catching fish, and modify his line set up accordingly. Also fish don’t tend to strike a nymphs as hard as they do dry flies on the water’s surface, so it’s more difficult to know the exact time to set the hook.

Equipment Required for Nymph Fishing

For successful nymph fishing, you will need a strike indicator. A strike indicator  is a brightly coloured object that floats on top of the water, and when this indicator bobs in an unnatural manner that means you have a strike. The strike indicator is normally attached to the fly line, or is tied onto the leader a suitable distance away from the nymph.

Next, you will need some small weights to put on your floating fly line or leader to get your nymph to the correct depth. Alternatively, you can use a sink-tip fly line instead of a floating line with weights. Another useful item for nymph fly fishing is a good pair of polarized sunglasses which will reduce the glare reflected from the water and enable you to see the strike indicator clearly. The type of fly fishing rod you use will depend on the size of the river or stream being fished – generally, the smaller the river or stream, the shorter the rod required.

Dead Drift Fishing Technique

The most common nymph fly fishing technique that even a beginner can master is the “dead drift” fishing technique. This involves casting directly across the river, and letting the fly line drift downriver whilst keeping any slack out of the line. Perform an upstream mend if the nymph is drifting too quickly, or a downstream mend if the nymph is drifting too slowly. In the event of a strike, the angler just points the rod at the fly, and lifts the rod to set the hook. The fisherman wades downstream with this technique of fly fishing.

Exploring a Boating Marine Lifestyle

boating supplies

A boating marine life is far different from a so-called “normal” life. In our culture, we are raised with certain expectations of how our lives should be. We are supposed to want marriage, family, a house with a white picket fence and a minivan or SUV. However, a growing number of people have begun to realize that this is only one of many possible lifestyles. A boating marine life can be every bit as fulfilling as a traditional life.

Choosing a boating marine life does not necessarily mean deciding against marrying and having children. Many families successfully live for years on houseboats. Many adventurous types even sail around the world together. For this to work, it is imperative that the family is close and good at problem solving. It is not easy to slam doors and have a time out when you are in tight quarters in the middle of the ocean. Nonetheless, for families that are willing to remain level headed and work together, a boating marine lifestyle can and does work well.

If you are alone, your choices for a boating marine life are limitless. You could sign on for a stint as a deckhand on a tall sailing ship or travel the world on a luxury cruise ship. You can even choose to purchase a small seagoing vessel and travel alone. Ply the same waters once traveled by pirates and explorers or simply live just offshore on a houseboat.

Choosing a boating marine life means giving up certain comforts. Much like living in an RV, space on a boat is at a premium. You and your travel partners(s) must be comfortable in extremely small and crowded quarters. Even if you sign on with a commercial ship, your living area will be cramped.

If you are venturing out alone or with family or friends, you should familiarize yourself with how to make basic repairs on your vessel. In many parts of the world, you may be far from easy assistance when your boat breaks down. It is imperative for anyone who plans to begin a boating marine life to know how to solve problems with the boat.

Make sure that your boat is in top shape before setting off on any voyage. Have the vessel inspected by a professional. Also, file a sailing plan with the Coast Guard as well as leaving a copy with a trusted friend or relative. Make sure that you have adequate boating supplies on board including extra drinking water and a full set of tools.

Make several practice runs prior to embarking on a long voyage. This will allow you to fine tune your packing list and gain extra familiarity with your boat. Boating safety and proper boating gear are essential to a successful voyage.

The boating marine life can be difficult and often lonely. In exchange, you have the world as your oyster. Falling asleep on a gently rocking craft, finding yourself in the middle of a school of dolphins, or simply watching land drift by in the distance are just a few of the rewards for those brave enough to follow the call of the sea. The boating world is fairly small, meaning that you will gradually make friends in different ports. There is no real need for loneliness when your friends are just an easy sail away. This life requires a certain personality type, but if you have it, you may find that you never wish to return to your old life.
