Buying A Fishing Boat?

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Ever since one of my good friends took me out fishing last year, I have wanted to buy a fishing boat. The one he uses is pretty decrepit and bare-bones. As a matter of fact, we spent half the time bailing and the other half fishing. Needless to say, all of that water splashing into the lake scared off some of the fish, but we still had a great time. I even helped him to patch up that fishing boat over the summer, and by the end of it, it almost looked like new. However, I really longed to have my own fishing boat so that I could go whenever I wanted.

Looking for fishing boats for sale has been pretty exciting for me. The kind of fishing boat for sale that you need depends on what kind of fishing you want to do. Many people think that they need some kind of deluxe, expensive craft, but nothing could be further from the truth. As a matter of fact, if you do lake fishing, the smaller the better. You will create less noise and have a smaller profile in the water, which gives you a lower chance of tipping the fish off and alerting them to your presence. Small used fishing boats for sale with outboard motors will do fine for most purposes.

Nevertheless, at first all I did was look at the big, impressive  fishing schooners. I would go to the local boat show and look at all of the fishing boats for sale, dreaming of getting an ocean worthy craft and taking it all over the world, living off the bounty of the seven seas. I know it was a pretty childish fantasy, but I couldn’t help it. There is something about those boats, half vehicle and have home, that got my blood pumping. Having one of them would mean that I could make my home on the waves anywhere I wanted to go – a luxury afforded to a few people.

Nonetheless, eventually my taste in fishing boats for sale calmed down and matured a little bit. I came to realize that I didn’t need anything fancy. I Finally bought a small, flat bottomed aluminum boat with an outboard motor on it that would be perfect for day fishing trips In local lakes. With all of the drooling I had done over fishing boats for sale, I think I was finally able to calm down and make a considered choice.

Alaska Fishing The True Wilderness

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

There are not many places left in the world that can truly be described as wilderness. Alaska has those places and tourists love to see its pristine environment. Fishing enthusiasts particularly like to come here and any Alaska fishing guide will show that the sport can be pursued by novices or experts in many different locations and catching several different types of fish. Many companies organise fishing vacations in this region.

The Kenai River is a favorite spot for salmon charters, seeking to catch King, Red, Pink and Silver Salmon. Halibut and Trophy Rainbow Trout are also to be found here. Salmon drift boat fishing on the Kasilof is also popular. The boats come equipped with tackle, bait, GPS navigation system, radar and a heated cabin and inside bathroom. The guide provided is an expert in local conditions and finding fish. Many of these charters are part of packages that include lodge style accommodation.

All kinds of fishing are catered for here and an Alaska fishing guide will direct people to the right location or method of fishing that is right for them. Guided charters are available on the remote Talachulitna River, a perfect spot for fly fishing, float fishing or spin fishing. This beautiful area in South Central Alaska gives the opportunity to catch rainbow trout, five different species of Pacific Salmon, dolly varden or Arctic Grayling.

The guides are skilled in fishing and in rafting and all flies and spinners are supplied. After a day’s sport, guests can retire to comfortable riverside camps, equipped with large tents, sleeping bags and cots. They will have worked up an appetite and tasty meals are served. It is a good idea to consult an Alaska fishing guide on what to take along but the basic essentials are clothes, rods, reels and waders.

For those wanting an experience in very remote terrain with a variety of wildlife, traveling to the far north fulfills that dream. The Anvik River Lodge, which can be found in a good Alaska fishing guide, provides comfort, privacy and amenities on the banks of the 120 mile Anvik, which is a tributary of the famous Yukon River. Guests are flown in from Anchorage on private flights. The accommodation includes private baths and a communal dining room, where fresh food including Alaska steak and King Crab are served. They can hope to catch Pacific Salmon, Northern Pike, white fish, shee fish and Arctic Char. There is also the exciting prospect of seeing grizzly bears, moose, otters, wolves, beavers and various species of birds.

Selecting the right pair of binoculars

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

If asked, most people would turn down help when selecting a pair of binoculars. Most likely, they would simply choose them based upon either magnification or perhaps price. After all that is all there is to it, right? Well…No.

A few basic definitions to start. Binoculars are designated by their magnification and the objective lens diameter; for example 7×35 means that the binoculars will magnify an object so that it appears seven times (7x) closer than it actually is. The number 35 represents the diameter of the objective lenses in millimeters, which are the light gathering lenses. Exit pupil is a specification that defines the size, in millimeters, of the light at the eyepiece and should match the diameter of the iris for an unvignetted view. Exit pupil becomes a more important factor when using the binoculars during low light periods. Eye relief is a measurement in millimeters of how far back from the eyepiece the eye should be positioned to enjoy a full clear view. This is an important specification for anyone that will be wearing eyeglasses. Eyecups are included to help position the eyes correctly. Lower priced binoculars will simply have a rubber lip that cap be rolled down, whereas higher priced binoculars actually have adjustable eye cups that may have three or four preset positions for proper eye relief.  Field of View is a measurement of the width of the view at some standard distance downfield, typically at a thousand yards. Depth of View is the total distance into the field that is in focus.

The first thing that a person needs to consider when selecting binoculars is how they will be using them. Is your primary use for hunting, while hiking a nature or scenic trail, stadium viewing, or perhaps you may be a birding enthusiast? Consider if the binoculars will be used during the twilight of dawn or dusk, certainly a critical time period for hunters and birders alike. Larger objective lenses will draw in more light during this period, however a larger objective also means it will be heavier. This could be an issue if they are carried around all day. A binocular harness can help support the weight of full size binoculars without the fatigue associated with a neck strap. They are reasonably priced and support the binoculars at the chest when not in use.If a full day of lugging around heavy binoculars is not for you, then by all means select a mid sized pair with an objective lens that is around 32 to 40 mm. Just keep in mind that the view may not be quite as bright as the full size models. Do keep in mind though that higher quality glass in a smaller model can outperform lower quality glass in a larger model.

A binocular body style is based upon the type of prism that is utilized, either porro or roof. When inspecting Porro prism binoculars you will notice that the eyepieces are not in line with the objective lenses. Roof Prisms, however do have the eyepiece and objective lenses in line. Roof prism binoculars are more compact and rugged than Porros but more costly to build. Generally speaking, some Porros will produce a brighter image and greater depth of field than roof prisms of the same magnification, objective size and optical glass quality. Roof prism models manufactured by Zeiss use a phase coating technique on the prism glass to produce truly remarkable image quality.

Do consider the ease of focusing. Quick focusing is a must for the hunter or the birder. Look for a pair of binoculars that can focus from close up out to infinity with a single stroke of the finger. You need to be able to zero in as quickly as you can so that you maximize the time analyzing the object so you don’t waste precious seconds messing around with the focus wheel. If reducing the focusing time is very important to you, then consider a pair of binoculars that have a greater depth of field. Once the diopter adjustment is set then everything is always in focus whether it is 10 feet or 1,000 feet away. This style is preferred by the military. Fujinon manufactures high quality binoculars that are “focus free” and also have options for a reticle or built in compass. The close focusing specification is all about how close to the user the binoculars will focus. Any binocular can focus out at infinity, the trick is how close can the binoculars focus. The specifications are different for each model. Manufacturers such as Brunton and Zeiss have models that focus three to six feet away, respectively. The close focus is a critical specification for birders and those who enjoy butterfly watching. If close focusing is important to you then select a binocular with a close focus specification of less than ten feet.

The next thing to consider is the lens coatings. Coated optics reduces the amount of light that gets reflected inside the binocular housing. Reduced contrast of the scene or object is a direct result of light that gets reflected rather than transmitted.  Look for lenses that are fully multi-coated. Be careful here as there are also other coating designations as well.
Coated optics- A single layer on at least one lens surface.
Fully coated optics have a single layer on all air to glass surfaces.
Multi coated optics have multiple layers on at least one lens surface.
Fully multi coated optics have multiple layers on all air to glass surfaces.

What is the likelyhood that you will need to depend upon your binoculars during a rainstorm? Don’t let a little rain stop you from achieving your goals for the day. Unfortunately just like any glass surface, the view may get distorted due to the moisture build up on the glass lenses. Once again this could be a time when seconds matter and stopping to wipe the lenses could result in a lost opportunity or perhaps even scratched lenses if you do not have a soft lens cloth along. Zeiss has an additional proprietary coating called Lotutec coating which actually causes water to bead up and roll of the lenses allowing continued use during a rain. There is truly a lot of value to that coating for the serious hunter or birder.

Let’s discuss magnification further. When you look through a pair of binoculars your observing the field of view. As a larger magnification is selected, eye relief is reduced and a narrower field of view is available. In addition, as a larger magnification is selected it is more difficult to hold the binoculars steady enough by hand without getting movement. Additionally, maritime use where the continuous bobbing and rolling produced by the water also creates motion, a smaller magnification and larger objective lens size will allow for more forgiveness for the movement. So select magnification carefully, as a seven or eight power will work fine for most applications. If higher magnifications are needed for land applications, then consider purchasing a tripod or other support. Image stabilized binoculars are ideal for maritime use.

Finally, color and clarity of the view is the most important feature that differentiates premium binoculars from less expensive binoculars. Serious hunters and birding enthusiasts alike demand these quality features. To be able to pick out detail and colors from a camouflaged background can mean the difference between spotting the object of interest and missing it completely.

One of the most scenic areas in Canada is the state of Ontario. Large areas of the state are still a wonderful wilderness where people can escape from the bustle of city life. It’s an ideal location for hikers, hunters, bird watchers and fishing enthusiasts who like to get away from traffic noise. Ontario fishing is particularly popular and there are many companies that specialize in this sort of vacation. The air and water is pollution free and it’s a big enough region to avoid being crowded with tourists.

Lakeair Lodge is a family run business and has been operating since 1919. The cottages and boats are sited on the west side of Lake Nipissin. The accommodation is clean and comfortable and has sundecks or screened porches. Homemade meals are served in the communal dining room and there is a packed lunch prepared and a maid service. Alternative living quarters can be found at the trailer park.

The boats are maintained well and bait is supplied. This is the best of Ontario fishing in gorgeous scenery with islands, bays and a stretching shoreline. The lake promises pike, bass, musky and walleyes. Perch, sunfish, sturgeon and garpike can also be found. It’s a good area to explore when not fishing, amongst the pine trees and granite rocks. The Mashkinonje Provincial Park is a nearby nature preservation area.

The French River area has another vacation spot, on the south shore of Trout Lake. Silvery Moon Lodge offers Ontario fishing sport on the 15 miles long lake, stocked with trout, bass, pike, musky and walleye. There are nine cabins along the water’s edge with screened porches and consisting of one to three bedrooms. Gas barbecues are provided and the boats are equipped with fuel, nets and life jackets. Boats can put out on the launch ramp and a successful catch can be cleaned at the cleaning station.

This site is a good location for all the family and there is plenty to do for the children. There is a beach and a playground and kids like to catch the local frogs. There are hiking paths through the forest and activities such as hunting, canoeing and kayaking. The site also has badminton and volleyball courts.

Red Pine Lodge on Ivanhoe Lake is another scenic spot, with white beaches and surrounding pine trees. The lodge has three bedrooms, lounge and dining room and there are also cottages that sleep 2-10 people. The Northern Lights are a common sight here and there is the opportunity to hunt for moose or bear as well as going Ontario fishing.

Using Knife Sharpeners Properly

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

When you think about all the finishes you can use on your knife, you will be more careful about the choices you make when buying your new knives for your kitchen. There are plenty of knife finishes techniques which allow you to create your own, unique knife design. There are however some very important things to that you need to bear in mind when you are deciding the type of finish. {And with right|With good} Warthog sharpener, you can {make miracles|hit the home run}.

An inside finish is usually applied with the jeweled metal knives. You can see from outside the knife how beautiful knife will be with this finish. The handle can be imprinted with a file work finish and we are able to promote projects we wish via that twchnique. Knife won’t work any better with a finish, since that has only cosmetic importance to the blade. With this, only the look of the knife is changed.

The option we could also use is a stonewash finish technique. The goal of these knives is to look antique, that is the way they are designed. They look much older because they have an abrasive designs on them, which enhances their look. These types of knives are very popular among people, since the knives do not get damaged easily and they look old from day one. With good knife sharpener, its doable. This finish will hide any dull patches of the blade. If you want a shiny polished look then you could consider using a scotchbrite finish, these are durable and will stand up to the test of time.

Yet, we can use vibed finishing as one more finishing path. We use this to create a little worn look, but not stonewashed worn, just one step behind it. If you want your knives to be good for display only, then a polished knife finish is your best option, but be careful about damaging the blade. If you are careful about those small issues, you will be on a good way to have sharp blades in your kitchen.

Tips To Help You Improve At Deer Hunting

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

deer

Few game animals are as deceptive as deer. They give the appearance of a gentle animal when in reality, they are among the most difficult animals to bag. They can smell a human from a long distance away and will walk a wide circle around a hunter, who will remain oblivious to the fact that he’s been outsmarted.

Seasoned hunters will all have their particular “tricks” they like to use to bag deer, however the same methods won’t work for everyone. It’s a matter of trying to see what works on the populations where you enjoy hunting. There are various sprays you can use to mask your scent as well as other tips to get that buck with the antlers for your wall.

Skill and understanding the psychology of this animal will go a long way towards making a legitimate kill. A mature buck will usually forage in the early morning and then bed down to snooze until the early evening hours when he will rise again. If you can get downwind of a resting buck, when he rises from his bed, you will get a clear shot nearly every time. Another trick you can use when you’re hunting is to use your turkey call. They feel comforted by the call of the turkey as the birds are silent when dangers such as hunters are around. A quick noise on your turkey call now and then will leave the herd that you are creeping up on very calm, so you can literally have your pick of among the herd.

Another trick you can use when you’re hunting is to let other big game hunters do the work for you. Often hunters that flush out a herd will send them running and if you’re across the way – the herd will be coming right at you. A good way to enable this situation to happen is to position yourself across from other hunters in high ground or thick cover. When deer are panicked they will look for an escape route and that is usually higher ground or a thickly overgrown area in which to hide.

Use these tips for your next hunting trip and see if getting a buck with a great rack isn’t just a little bit easier. When hunting deer, honing your hunting skills on a regular basis will enable you to be a hunter that doesn’t just come back from your hunting trips with big stories of the one that got away.

Years from now, when I think about my father, the Utmost memories I will have of him will be of the times we spent hunting together. Obviously, there are lots of ways to spend time with your children. However, there’s nothing quite like spending time together in the woods for a number of people.

There is just something about being able to sit and converse in such a peaceful environment. Listening to your father tell stories about a variety of winning hunts he has had over the years.

Then, dreaming of starting your own list of stories is an experience that is hard to put into words. As a kid, when you finally do bag that first deer or turkey or whatever the case may be, there are a small number of things that can compare to the look of pride that you will see in your father’s eyes.

Make It Educational

For your children, hunting can also be an implausible learning experience. You would be hard pressed to discover a better place to teach your child about wildlife and nature.

You can educate your children about the numerous kinds of trees and plants that you find along the way. Additionally, you can also educate your children about respecting animals, even the ones you are not hunting.

In fact, how to properly and safely handle firearms is the most essential lesson you can communicate to your child while hunting. A child that is taught to respect guns and the potential dangers that go along with them will probably be less likely to misuse them in the future. This is, of course, a subject that is widely debated, and will go on to be for some times.

So as to enjoy the lots of benefits that come along with taking a child hunting, it has to be done in a responsible and safe manner. No one should hunt without going through the correct training courses first. This is right for children and adults alike.

Hunting Knives Need Sharpening Too

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Cutting with a hunting knife that is becoming dull is 10 times more difficult, which is a fact every experienced hunter knows. It’s important to be able to feel a change in the cutting pattern of your knife so you know when the blade is beginning to dull. If you posses this ability, it will be easy for you to figure out when your knife needs to be sharpened.

With the right tools, you can do just that, but it takes more than going to the store and picking out the cheapest sharpening device. You’ll need some skill and ingenuity to figure out what is the best knife sharpener that would suit your hunting knife. Diamond, ceramic sharpener and arkansas stoneare three main types of hunting knife sharpeners. Now we will try to find out how these sharpeners can be of help to you when it comes to sharpening.

Arkansas Stone sharpeners are the most common type used among hunters and wilderness types today. Sharpeners like these are proven to work great for generations, and it is quite easy to find them. You will see that there re different grades of this stone, because it has different degrees of roughness.

To get a different sharpness of your knife, you need to use one grade over another. Most men who are spending a lot of their time outdoors know that Arkansas Stone is the best, in spite of many new young men who are looking for some new type of sharpeners for knives.

Take a ceramic knife sharpener if you want to have something that is durable and lightweight in the same time. They are made of two ceramic rods on the sides and a big block of wood. These sharpeners will last a lifetime, but they are best suited to finishing a blade off or sharpening a hunting knife that hasn’t been burdened with a high degree of dullness.

But, there are many hunting pocket knife sharpeners that can be carried on a trip to the woods since they are so small, they can help you restore the edge to your blade in case it gets a bit dull and needs sharpening.
